Candelabra at the Cloisters

39. Candle(light)

39. Candle(light)

So I had to stretch the theme a bit here. No, there is no candle “light” exactly, but this is kind of a neat candelabra.  I’m doing a subtle substitution.

BTW, I consider myself a pretty decent speller, but the word ‘candelabra’ had my totally stumped. Was it “d-l-e” or “d-a-l” or “d-e-l”? So if nothing else, at least I know how to spell a new word.

As for the candelabra, it’s a rather ancient fixture–15th century or so. And another photograph from the Cloisters in NYC.

Shrine of St. Anne and the Holy Kinship

89. Faded

222. Paint or Painted

The Cloisters, part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, has some amazing ancient artifacts. This wood relief from Northern Europe was carved and painted in the late 1400s.  This is only a small portion of the entire work of art.

Forgery at The Cloisters

221. Oops!

221. Oops!

This fountain was acquired by The Cloisters, part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, as a 12th century original from the  monastery of Notre-Dame-du-Vilar. Now it is thought to be a forgery from The Pyrenees region and is dated from the early 20th century. Not quite what they bargained for, or paid for, I assume.

Stained Glass at The Cloisters

191. Museum

191. Museum

While in New York City, we visited The Cloisters, part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This museum features a massive collection of medieval art. These stained glass windows are from a castle in Austria, circa 1390.

Altar and Saints

215. Ornate

215. Ornate

Ornate. That’s about the extent of what I know about much of Medieval Art. The Cloisters, part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, has a large collection that is hard to appreciate in one trip.

This altar was carved out of alabaster in the late 15th Century by sculptor Tomas Ginter. It was originally located in Zaragoza, Spain.

I didn’t get the information about the three female saints positioned on the altar, nor the massive relief in the background. There was just so much to see.
