This is the entrance to the Wisconsin Union Theater, a building in the Bascom Hill Historic District on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.
There is a historical marker here with the following inscription:
A Stage For All
Not long after she was denied permission to perform at the D.A.R. Constitution Hall in Washington D.C. because she was African-American, famous singer Marian Anderson found welcome at the University of Wisconsin. She sang at Memorial Union in 1939, headlining the inaugural season of performances in the Wisconsin Union Theater, the first cultural center to be opened in the university union. Over the years, the theater established itself as a showcase for all cultures, including such luminaries as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald and Paul Robeson.
Here is a photograph of the rest of the building.
What stunning detail – a beautiful piece of architecture!!
Excellent detail shot of the building – I love the asymmetry of it. What a storied background this building has and I’m sure a source of pride for the university. Thanks for showing the whole building too – its nice to put the detail from the main image in context.
Gorgeous architectural shot. Beautiful building too! I like the way you got the cool green ceiling to show up.
What a grand entrance. I like how the bright arches frame the detailed interior ceiling drawing your eye there.
The arches are superb and that is enhanced by seeing the building setting as well, the history of the story is the topper for me.
I love the arches. No Mickey D arches here.
Beautiful detail and design. Great history behind this building.
