Blizzard

153. How About This Weather?

153. How About This Weather?

I’ve seen lovely yellow wildflowers on other photoblogs, trees greening, water flowing. Not in Wisconsin. We’re still in the death-grip of winter. So far we’ve had nine inches of snow in the last 12 hours, and it is still snowing.

So, how about this end-of-February weather?

Sarah’s Quilt

146. Heirloom

146. Heirloom

Sarah was my great-grandmother; she was born in 1866. She made this “comfort” as she referred to it in her diary, when she was 18 years old. Circa 1884.

Sarah’s older sister and the sister’s husband owned a millinery shop in the small town of Kahoka, Missouri. They would collect the scraps from the shop and bring them to Sarah and her sisters. The girls would sew in the evening after the day’s chores were finished. The materials were the finest available–moires, brocades, chintze, silks, and damasks. Though the “comfort” has a lot of wear in a few of the fabrics, I consider it one of my family heirlooms.

If you’d like to see a larger portion of the coverlet and more photos with different details, including pieces on which Sarah also painted flowers and swans, they are on this flickr set.

Perfect for these wintry days– a shivery feeling that keeps me searching for ways to get warm. Making a big pot of Tortilla Two Pepper Soup. Very yummy if you like a little warmth inside your belly!

Filbert Tree

71. Curly

You’d think maybe this Filbert Tree has just had enough. It’s a new tree, just planted last spring. And it’s still hanging on to last year’s leaves after surviving an onslaught of Japanese beetles last summer. Today it is windy, and snowy, and cold, and you’d think maybe this tree decided to just curl up and call it quits?

But no–this is how a Filbert always looks. Like someone just took a curling iron to all of its branches. So there it is. A very curly tree!

A new set of knives, really good knives, has resulted in more than a few cut fingers. Glad I’m not the one doing the slicing.

On a kiosk on the University of Wisconsin Madison. No dearth of activities when the students need some time away from the books.
